Looking back on the journeys I’ve made through Europe, I think of the countries that made a stellar first impression on me and that it’s impressive positive influence quickly turned into LOVE. High on that list is possibly one of Europe’s most underrated travel destinations, Romania.

A country in eastern Europe like no other, with a Latin influence ranging from their language to the warm character of the people, it can be easy to forget you are not in the Mediterranean.

Romania has everything you could ever desire from a holiday destination; brilliant cuisine, friendly locals, buzzing cities, typical traditional villages and enormous areas of wonderful nature.

Whether you are travelling to Romania to see one of the many Dracula castles such as Bran, Corvin or my personal favourite, Peles, or you are there to experience some of the world-famous roads like the Transfagarasan and the Transalpina, one town acts as a great rest stop away from the large groups of travellers resting their legs in Sighisoara or Sibiu.

Sebeș is a small town with an energetic atmosphere, there are some historical buildings, pleasant parks and plenty of amenities for all your needs. While considering Sibiu contains more hotels for its size, it also gets fully booked very quickly during the summer months. In Sebes there are fewer hotel choices, but there is greater availability.

When choosing a hotel in Sebeș there is only one recommendation I can make, Karlhof. Located on a sleepy residential road just 5 minutes’ walk from the town centre, Karlhof appears as a large, well-kept house with trimmed lawns, a pool and secure fencing surrounding the property.

Value for money at Karlhof here is outstanding. As a 4-star hotel with everything from efficient laundry service to a spa complete with pool, it is hard to believe I paid just £41 per night during high-season for a clean, comfortable room with a deluxe double bed, air-conditioning and a private balcony.

Arriving at the hotel, check-in is a fast and friendly process with polite staff that speak many languages, assisting you with your every need. The decor inside is light and luxurious with hardwood used throughout the building.

Once in your room, power outlets are plenty and the wifi signal throughout is top-notch. There is air-conditioning in the rooms and there is also enough space to hang your entire wardrobe and the bathroom comes fully equipped with soft, clean towels, a dressing gown and toiletries to wash with, should you arrive without.

After a long day of exploring you need not look any further for a place to eat. I can’t recommend their restaurant enough, the dishes are traditional, the variety is plentiful, and the flavours are inspirational. After eating there for two nights, I thought I would take a walk around the town and see where else there was to eat, needless to say, I met some locals and asked them where the best place was to eat in Sebeș, without hesitation they replied “Karlhof! We all go there for a nice meal”.

In the morning, breakfast is well worth taking. Ask for a coffee from the bar as the machine there is better, grab a plate and start feasting on hot and cold breakfast options. Everything from bacon and eggs, to fruit, cereals, yoghurt and even some mysterious bite-size Romanian pastry treats with tasty centres.

Breakfast and dinner can be eaten inside the elegant dining room or outside in the pleasant garden. If you are staying on the wing with a balcony room like I did you can walk straight from the garden outside up to your balcony and into your room.

What I like the most about Karlhof is the relaxed atmosphere, you can never feel out of place or underdressed and all of the staff are very focused on providing the best experience possible.

Karlhof is a real gem within the town of Sebeș, which itself is a delightful town within arm’s reach of many popular sights, so whether you are navigating through Romania from East to West or vice versa, you can trust that Karlhof will make your vacation all the more memorable.

I would like to personally thank all of the staff at Karlhof for my wonderful time there, and for looking after me so well as I’m sure the circumstances of my arrival will keep me in their memory for a while.
